In a large metropolitan area like Phoenix, you might expect that there is always something going on. You are correct! Phoenix, Peoria, Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Glendale and many other communities have recurring events of which they are proud.

These are many of the community events that you can count on year in and year out. All dates, prices, and activities mentioned are subject to change without notice. Check the web site or call to confirm information. The activities in this event calendar are appropriate for families unless otherwise indicated. If the event is free, I'll mention that, too.

  • Concerts and Shows Scheduled For This Month in the Phoenix Area

  • 3rd Thursday Artisan & Cottage Foods Night Fair
    Food, jewelry, crafts, paintings, sculptures and more. Live music. 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Kiva Center in Old Town Scottsdale. Call for info 480-292-1100.

  • 4th of July Festivals and Fireworks Celebrations
    Every city and town in the Valley has some sort of Independence Day event that's suitable for the entire family.

  • Arizona Diamondbacks Baseball
    The Arizona Diamondbacks play professional Baseball at Chase Field.
    In 2008: Various dates in July

  • Birds in the Garden
    Join expert birders for a morning bird walk along the Garden trails. Everyone, including first-time birders, is welcome. Wear a hat, sunscreen and comfortable walking shoes. Bring binoculars if available. Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix at 7 a.m. This activity is included in the regular admission fee.

  • Crossroads of the West Gun Show
    At the Arizona State Fairgrounds. The shows offer hundreds of tables of interest to both the once a year hunter and the avid collector.
    In 2008: July 19 - 20

  • Date Creek Ranch U-Pick Peaches and Apples
    Eat what you pick right from the trees and take some with you. Call first to find out if the fruit is ripe yet.
    In 2008: Probably first weekend in July

  • First Friday
    Visit more than 40 downtown Phoenix art galleries, studios and art spaces. Free.
    In 2008: First Friday of the month

  • Flashlight Tours
    Nights in the desert are anything but dull. Nighthawks fly, night-blooming flowers open, toads sing and owls watch as you roam the trails of the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, never knowing what will be around each corner. Wear walking shoes, and bring a flashlight. 7 p.m. Flashlight tours are free with admission, but require reservations. Call 480-941-3510.
    In 2008: Every Thursday and Saturday in July

  • Free Summer Concert Series
    For nine straight Tuesdays, this summer, a new band will offer a diverse lineup of Reggae, rock, funk, hip-hop and jazz. Free. 12 to 1 p.m. Arizona State University, Memorial Union Stage, 1290 S. Normal Ave., Tempe. Call 480-965-5062.

  • Latin Rhythms Festival
    Live music, wine tasting, food sampling at Kokopelli Winery & Bistro. Downtown Chandler.

  • Lori Piestewa National Native American Games
    Sporting competitions in basketball, cross country, softball, track & field, volleyball.
    In 2008: July 17 -20

  • McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park Free Concerts
    Sundays from 7:30 - 9:00 p.m. in Scottsdale. Bring a blanket or a lawn chair and enjoy a variety of music. Train and carousel rides are available throughout all concerts for a small charge.
    In 2008: July 6, 13

  • Mighty Mud Mania
    Part of Scottsdale Parks and Recreation Summer Program. Held at Chaparral Park. The one place it's O.K. for the kids to get dirty.
    In 2008: July 18

  • Monsoon Madness
    Queen Creek. Inflatable bounce-houses, water slides, dunk tank, the Queen Creek Mud Pit, and more.
    In 2008: July 12

  • Movies at the Museum
    Phoenix Art Museum. Independent and classic cinema and documentaries relating to art, artists, and works on view in the Museum, usually followed by discussion. Free with paid museum admission. First come, first seated.
    In 2008: July 22

  • Phoenix Mercury WNBA Basketball
    The women of the Phoenix Mercury play professional basketball at the US Airways Center.
    In 2008: Various dates in July
